Course Description
The Bachelor of Development Studies (BDS) is an interdisciplinary undergraduate programme designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and practical competencies required to promote sustainable socio-economic development at the local, national, regional, and global levels. The programme provides a comprehensive understanding of development theories, public policy, governance, community empowerment, economic development, environmental sustainability, project management, social development, and institutional transformation.
The curriculum integrates multidisciplinary perspectives from economics, sociology, anthropology, public administration, management, environmental studies, technology, and social sciences to enable graduates to analyze complex development challenges and design innovative, evidence-based solutions. Students develop competencies in policy analysis, strategic planning, research, project design and implementation, resource mobilization, monitoring and evaluation, advocacy, community engagement, and sustainable development practices.
Throughout the programme, learners gain practical experience through fieldwork, consultancy practice, community service, industrial attachment, and applied research. The programme emphasizes ethical leadership, social inclusion, gender responsiveness, environmental stewardship, innovation, digital technologies for development, and the achievement of national, regional, and global development goals, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Graduates are prepared to work effectively with governments, development agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), community-based organizations (CBOs), international organizations, humanitarian agencies, research institutions, private sector organizations, and social enterprises. The programme also provides a strong academic foundation for postgraduate studies in development studies, public policy, project management, international development, governance, and related disciplines.

The programme consists of 48 units, delivered over four academic years (twelve trimesters), culminating in industrial attachment, community service, and an independent research project.
